Painting as a Tension of the World

For me, painting is a space of freedom, confrontation and expression. The gesture breaks free from faithful representation, the material asserts its presence, and colour becomes a force in its own right. In an approach informed by Neo-Expressionism, I seek not so much to reproduce reality as to bring forth its tensions, contradictions and darker undercurrents.

Portraiture occupies a central place in this exploration. Faces, sometimes distorted, exaggerated or grotesque, become territories in which human frailties, power relations and the absurdities of our time come into view. Vivid colours, stark contrasts and incisive strokes do not seek to embellish the subject, but to reveal its intensity, even at the risk of unsettling the viewer.

Between figuration and distortion, the familiar slips into the strange. The gesture retains its accidents, the surface its roughness, and the unfinished remains an open possibility. I am drawn to painting that does not seek to reassure, that embraces excess, discomfort and ambiguity, allowing the tragic and the ironic, violence and a certain sense of derision, to coexist.

Painting thus becomes a way of questioning our collective memory and the human condition. Behind the brilliance of colour and the excess of these figures, one question remains: what does a face reveal about its time, and what does it tell us, beyond its own story, about ourselves?
